Hello and welcome to the BoutiqueBiz Chronicles.
My name is Ruth, a local business guru and aspiring journalist. Today’s story celebrates the beautiful mother, with a heart for other mothers who are about to give birth or are in the postpartum stage. Dalen’s passion is to create a supportive community and provide affordable products to foster the wellbeing of mothers.
Labour and Love was created to provide mothers, both pre and postpartum, with natural and organic products. The idea first came to founder Dalen through reflecting on her own journey into motherhood and her desire for natural, organic options for birth and postpartum care. Dalen said “We’re introducing water birth supplies and products. And it’s really just about supporting women to have a natural birth, that is particularly our demographic towards natural, organic. All of our postpartum products are natural, non-synthetic, nothing artificial, all organic. I wanted to create a business that fit my values. I wanted to create a space where I had products that I would have wanted when I had kids.”

After a traumatic birth with her first child, Dalen chose a more natural path during her second pregnancy, which led to a home water birth. This time, she felt more in control and deeply empowered. Being in her own home brought a sense of comfort and safety that had been missing before. Dalen shared that “My first birth with my son was quite traumatic for me. And when I found out I was pregnant with my second, I was like, ‘That’s not happening again. I’m going to completely take control.’ I learned a lot more about how your body works through birth and how to naturally support that.” Dalen ended up successfully having her second child at home. After that experience she decided, “I want more women to know that they can do that as well.”
Dalen also noticed how often people come to dote on the newborn, while the mother can be left feeling unseen. Visits are usually for the baby, not always for the mum, and that can feel overwhelming and lonely. Dalen has designed a postpartum journal to help with the adjustment to having a new baby. She commented “I didn't want it to talk about birth. It's genuinely just focused on them and their healing... there's baby books everywhere! I wanted to give something that can sit on their bedside table, and use for two minutes while you're breastfeeding to have a quick focus on you and write down how you're feeling. I would've loved something like that.”

As she searched for postpartum products to support new mothers, Dalen became increasingly aware of the high prices that often come with the label “organic.” This stirred a passion in her to help make organic options more accessible. In today’s economy, living on one income is a huge challenge for families. While being a stay-at-home mum is a full-time job, it sadly comes without financial income. Dalen knew she could start a small business that would help support her family financially while also serving women and the season of mothering she cared deeply about. So, Labour and Love was born! Dalen said “I wanted to make things that were organic that did not have a five times markup on them. I wanted to create things that I could have afforded as well. And obviously that means we make less, but that was not the point of the business.”

After her positive second birth experience, Dalen felt inspired to help other women feel empowered and informed about the different birthing options available to them, whether that be in hospital or at home. Choice matters. Having many friends who have had children, I have heard stories of difficult pregnancies and traumatic births. Feeling like you have choices that suit you, and that allow you to feel comfortable going into birth, can bring such a deep sense of peace.
Hearing that Labour and Love only began five months ago was remarkable considering how much the business has already grown in such a short time. To me, that growth is a true testament to the love, passion, and dedication Dalen pours into this work.

Success for Dalen, from a business perspective, means that a postpartum mother feels truly seen and nurtured. For her, success is about creating a genuine connection between a mum and Labour and Love, and knowing that even one product or conversation can be of assistance. As she told me, “If even the tiniest amount of comfort is given to a mother, that is success for me.” On a personal level, Dalen already feels deeply successful. She considers herself wealthy in the ways that matter most. Her children, the privilege of building something she is passionate about, and the unwavering support of her partner are what define success in her eyes.
Dalen pointed out the importance of her partner’s support and shared that she would not be able to do this without him. He allows her to focus on motherhood and building the business. It is so important to Dalen to keep Labour and Love deeply personal, continuing to prioritise connection over commercialism and focusing on products and experiences that truly serve mothers.
If you or someone you know are looking for somewhere to purchase organic pre and postpartum products that will also value you and invite you as a mother into a community filled with support and love this is the business and community I would recommend.
